COQUITLAM - Lydia Ko won the Canadian Women's Open on Sunday to become the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history and only the fifth player to win a tournament amateur.
South Korea's 15-year resident of New Zealand, ended his participation with a return of 67 shots, five under par, to achieve victory by three strokes. Ko broke the record set by Lexi Thompson last September when she won the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama at age 16 and is the first amateur since JoAnne Carner won the Burdine's Invitational in 1969.
In January, Ko won the New South Wales Open in Australia at 14 to become the youngest player to win a professional event, a mark broken by Brooke Henderson, 14, in June at an event at the Canadian Women's Tour in Quebec. Ko also won the U.S. Women's Amateur two weeks ago in Cleveland.
Ko finished with 275 strokes, 13 under par, at the Vancouver Golf Club, escaping with birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine. Two rounds of 68 and a 72 on Saturday gave him a one-stroke lead ahead of the decisive round on Sunday.
Inbee Park signed a 69 to finish second.
The champion of the U.S. Women's Open Na Yeon Choi, Chella Choi and Jiyai Shin finished tied at 8 under par.
